What It’s Like to Live Free of Alarm Clock Slavery

Having the daily freedom to sleep or wake as I see fit is one of the HUGE “little” benefits that I gained when I became job-free. And here’s what that’s like.

No more alarm clock slavery for me!

No more alarm clock slavery for me!

I love the freedom of rising out of bed whenever I want. Of not having an annoying alarm clock jolt me out of sleep 5 days a week. If you still live at the mercy of alarm clock slavery, here’s what it’s like not to have to.

My financial independence has made alarm clocks a thing of the past for me.

It’s been over 14 years since I had to endure a first-thing-in-the-morning commute to report to a desk or to punch a time clock by a given time. That’s 14 years without having to wake up before I am ready. Fourteen years without the unwanted adrenaline jolt of a sudden awakening to clanging noise. Fourteen years without having to lurch groggily out of bed to meet an externally imposed daily time deadline. Having the daily freedom to sleep or wake as I see fit is one of the HUGE “little” benefits that I gained when I became job-free.

It’s the sun that gently and naturally wakes me. I rise rested and alert, without an uncalled-for shot of adrenaline coursing through my system. On the long days of summer, I’m up and raring to go by 6am. But on the shorter days of winter just before the time change, it could be 8am before I’m up. No matter! When you are financially free as I am, you are the one that determines when you should wake up. Or not.

Freedom from alarm clock slavery also means not paying a penalty for a late night.

One of the things I love to do in the evenings is to play computer strategy games.  Some nights, I get so engrossed that time just flies by without my noticing. Before I know it, it’s 2am or 3am and I’m still fully awake and playing away. But it doesn’t matter! If I sleep later the next morning, then I sleep later the next morning. There’s no need to force myself awake to meet an unbending job start time. There is no next-morning price to pay for my late night.

How does one put a dollar value on that daily freedom? What is it worth? What would you trade to bring closer the day that you too can enjoy this incredible daily boost to your day and to your quality of life?

I can’t come up with any financial assumptions that would help me put a dollar value on my freedom from alarm clock slavery. So how is this for giving it a value: it is priceless. And it’s automatically included, “at no extra cost,” with job-free financial independence.

  1. That’s one of the things I really love about working from home – no alarm clock scaring me into the day.

I have issues with insomnia and consistently dragging myself through the day with only four or 5 hours sleep had definite health (and productivity)consequences. It’s not so bad now but even if I have a bad night, I can sleep until I’m ready, no matter what time it is.

It’s one of the things I really appreciate about being able to run my business from home.
